All About Dues

Unions might tell you that dues are only a small percentage of your income, but they really add up. According to the Union of American Physicians and Dentists’ (UAPDs’) most recent financial report, every represented Advanced Practice Provider at Fred Hutch could pay $1,962 annually and $5,886 over a three-year contract.1 Given the size of the APP community, the UAPD stands to gain nearly $294,300 per year from Fred Hutch APPs, which is $882,900 over the course of a three-year contract.

Understanding How Unions Spend Dues Money

Spending by unions is publicly available via the Office of Labor-Management Standards, part of the U.S. Department of Labor. Financial reports show that unions like UAPD are a big business, supported almost entirely by dues straight from members’ paychecks.

In the 2024–2025 filing cycle, UAPD collected over $9.3 million in member dues.*
Despite collecting over $9.3 million from their nearly 4,500 members, UAPD only spent one third of that money on representing their members. Instead, according to their own reporting, UAPD spent that money on union administration, political activities and lobbying, and general overhead.*

UAPD is an affiliate organization of the AFSCME and the AFL-CIO. AFSCME and AFL-CIO use their funds, which come in part from your dues payments, for things like political activities and lobbyingunion administration, general overhead and more.
